In 2017 Mark Dean had the bright idea to hold an ANZAC service at the hall. In the forty or so years he'd lived in Oropi he couldn't remember one taking place in Oropi.
The service was lead by Deborah Garrett, an Anglican Priest, representing St George’s Anglican Church, Gate Pa, as Oropi is within its parish boundary. She was asked to take the service by Mark Dean, a member of the Oropi Hall committee and WBOPDC, who also happens to be her brother.
90 people packed into the foyer, which was moving and connecting, bringing home the reality of the impact of war, half a world away from most of the action. The service concluded with the last post played by Hamish Dean. Many people stayed to chat afterwards.
